(Ma...Japan now has a navy comparable to Britain's. (Maybe larger by now; I've not checked recent figures.) They should certainly take over patrolling the sea approaches to Japan. They should also do anti-piracy patrols in the South China Sea and the Straits of Malacca. The Straits of Hormuz too.<BR/><BR/>We also should nudge them (not that they would need much nudging) to build a ground-based ballistic missile defense (probably an ABM). This would have the effect of drawing Kim Jong-Il's fangs and would probably help convince the Chinese not to go all out on building IRBM's and ICBM's. Either or both of these actions would allow Japan to shoulder more of the burden of its own defense without rattling nerves unduly in other Asian countries.
