Jim Webb's victory in Virginia

Interesting commentary by David Boaz. We have a two-party system, so the choice is between Webb and Allen. Bottom Line: Webb's victory in the general election will be a major blow to Bush's Iraq policy and would strengthen the hands of the anti-war wing in the Democratic party.

I didn't know he was the author of that book! Thanks.

I am going to write a check today (I was going to anyway).

In the late 1970's, Webb wrote an article opposing using women in combat roles in the military. This came back to haunt him when he was being considered for a post in the DoD during Reagan's first term. Expect the Bushies to try to smear him with it again. Not that conservative Republicans are feminists; the Karl Rove way is to use any stick at hand though.

BTW, Webb's first novel, "Fields of Fire", based on his combat experience in Vietnam is one of the few great novels to come out of that war. No one who reads it will ever forget it.

Hey anonymousy comment above - this is a different anonymous. You mentioned Webb's opposition to women in combat roles in the 70s. You said conservatives will try to use that against him.

But couldn't that backfire? Most southern conservatives oppose putting women in combat roles - Of all the crazy things Webb could have done in the 70s (like Bush) - why should this position hurt him>?

This will not really work, I suppose this way.
